Phrasal Verb – cụm động từ – là một trong những nội dung cần thiết cho tất cả người học và muốn học tốt tiếng Anh. Học Phrasal verb vô cùng quan trọng chúng giúp chúng ta vừa có được vốn từ vựng nói riêng và vừa có có được những động từ tiếng Anh cần thiết nhất giúp người học tiếng Anh làm chủ trong giao tiếp. Sau đây sẽ là danh sách Phrasal Verb bắt đầu bằng từ BREAK mà bạn nên biết (có thể ứng dụng vào IELTS).

Break away

Nghĩa 1: To become separate, move away or leave something (tách rời, rờiđi)
Ví dụ: A few members of the mainstream political party BROKE AWAY and formed their own, more radical party

Nghĩa 2: To escape physically from someone or something (trốn thoát)

Ví dụ: The attacker grabbed her hair but she managed to BREAK AWAY.

Break down

Nghĩa 1: To stop working (usually referring to a machine or vehicle) (dừng hoạt động)

Ví dụ: My car BROKE DOWN on the way home last night!

Nghĩa 2: To become very upset or emotional (buồn bã, thất vọng)
Ví dụ: She BROKE DOWN when she started talking about her bad childhood

Nghĩa 3: To become weak or collapse (often due to stress) (trở nên yếuđuổi, sụpđổ)
Ví dụ: His work was so stressful that he had a BREAKDOWN and had to take 6 months off

Nghĩa 4: To cause something to fall or be destroyed (đập vỡ, phá hủy)
Ví dụ: I will BREAK DOWN this door if you dont open up!

Nghĩa 5: To explain something step by step (giải thích từng ý một)
Ví dụ: I dont think you understand so let me BREAK it DOWN for you

Nghĩa 6: To divide something into separate parts (chia thành nhiều phần)
Ví dụ: Thats come to a lot of money! Could we see a BREAK DOWN of the bill?

Nghĩa 7: When a discussion or relationship stops being successful (một cuộc tranh luận hoặc mối quan hệ thất bại)
Ví dụ: A lack of communication caused the relationship to BREAK DOWN

Nghĩa 8: To remove a difficulty that stops something from happening (giải quyết khó khăn khiến cho một vấn đề ngừng lại)
Ví dụ: We hope this event will BREAK DOWN barriers between neighbours

Nghĩa 9: To reduce something to its component parts (tan/ tách ra thành các thành phần)
Ví dụ: Water can be BROKEN DOWN into hydrogen and oxygen

Break even

Nghĩa: Neither gain nor lose money (không lời không lỗ, hòa vốn)
Ví dụ: After an entire night playing poker, he nearly BROKE EVEN.

Break into

Nghĩa 1: To start doing something (bắt đầu làm gì)

Ví dụ: I BROKE INTO a sweat when I started climbing the mountain.

Nghĩa 2: To begin working successfully in a new business or area (thành công trong một lĩnh vực)

Ví dụ: She only managed to BREAK INTO the music industry later in life

Nghĩa 3: To enter somewhere by force, illegally (xông vào trái phép)

Ví dụ: Some teenagers BROKE INTO the school and stole all the computers!

Break in(to)

Nghĩa 1: To enter somewhere by force, illegally (xông vào trái phép)

Ví dụ: The thieves BROKE IN through the side door that was left unlocked.

Break in on

Nghĩa: To interrupt or interject a conversation (gián đoạt cuộc hội thoại)

Ví dụ: Im sorry to BREAK IN ON your chat, but could I borrow your pen

Break off

Nghĩa 1: To separate something (làm tách rời)

Ví dụ: She BROKE OFF a piece of chocolate and put it in her mouth.

Nghĩa 2: To end a relationship (kết thúc mối quan hệ)

Ví dụ: She BROKE OFF the relationship after she found out he was cheating.

Nghĩa 3: To stop talking or doing something (usually abruptly) (bất ngờ, đột ngột dừng nói chuyện hoặc việc đang làm)

Ví dụ: She BROKE OFF in mid sentence after realising shed said the wrong thing.

Break open

Nghĩa: To open something by force (mở bằng vũ lực)

Ví dụ: The police BROKE OPEN the door when no one opened it.

Break out

Nghĩa 1: To escape from a place or situation (trốn thoát)

Ví dụ: They managed to BREAK OUT of prison by digging a tunnel.

Nghĩa 2: When something suddenly begins (often dangerous or unpleasant) (nổ ra, thường là nguy hiểm/ không mong muốn)

Ví dụ: War BROKE OUT after the opposition leader was shot.

Nghĩa 3: When something suddenly appears on your skin (xuất hiện/ nổi trên da)

Ví dụ: She BROKE OUT in a rash after she was stung by a bee.

Break through

Nghĩa 1: To force yourself through something that is holding you back (xông qua)

Ví dụ: They BROKE THROUGH the barriers to get into the music festival.

Nghĩa 2: To go higher than a certain or expected level (vượt qua)

Ví dụ: Profit this year BROKE THROUGH our annual sales targets.

Break up

Nghĩa 1: To divide something into smaller pieces (tách nhỏ)

Ví dụ: The land was BROKEN UP into smaller plots.

Nghĩa 2: Unable to hear someone when youre talking on the phone (không thể nghe rõ, mất sóng)

Ví dụ: Could you repeat that, please? Its a bad line and youre BREAKING UP.

Nghĩa 3: When a business or personal relationship ends (phá sản, chia tay)

Ví dụ: It was sad when Anna and Tom BROKE UP.

Nghĩa 4: When a school term ends, school finishes and the holidays start (hết năm học, kì nghỉ bắt đầu)

Ví dụ: We BREAK UP for Christmas this Friday. I cant wait!

Nghĩa 5: To stop a fight (dừng chuyến bay)

Ví dụ: The police BROKE UP a fight outside our local pub.
